This project was not only an exercise in the sensitive integration of modern additions to heritage architecture. It is also intended to demonstrate that it is possible to breathe new life into a heritage home with a modern addition. As well as minor adjustments and improvements to the interior of a century-old heritage home in Parktown, Johannesburg, a separate pavilion was added to the gardens of this property to house the owner’s collection of vintage sports cars. It includes a covered terrace, pool deck and a swimming pool. It creates a link between the main house and the lower garden, which was somewhat detached and inaccessible before. The upper level is positioned so as not to obstruct the outlook from the main house and features a roof garden to enhance the view. From the lawn below, the covered terrace is treated as a modernist-inspired glass box while solid teak cladding interacts beautifully with the plane trees.
