This project not only demonstrates how heritage architecture can effectively be altered to accommodate contemporary lifestyle requirements, but also explores the potential of modern additions to articulate a layered approach to architectural history. This project involved the renovation and alteration of a notable late-Edwardian heritage home high on Westcliff Ridge in Johannesburg. Several contemporary architectural additions – including pergolas, a pool pavilion, and a new study and gym – were planned in close conjunction with the landscaping and the restoration of the classical, formal terraced garden by Gregory Mark Landscape Design. The alteration of the house involved rationalising interior spaces to create an open, flowing arrangement and modernising the amenities. It also, however, involved reinstating certain historical details such as an open patio that had been enclosed. The new buildings are light and transparent, maintaining central axes and lines of sight and allowing the historical and contemporary elements to complement each other.
