This alteration and addition involved the reinvention of a late-1980s Tuscan-style house in a residential complex on Houghton Ridge in Johannesburg. The footprint of the existing house and garage was retained and a new ensuite master bedroom was added to the upper level above the garage. The façade was clad in Chromodek sheeting to unify and refine the detailing. Perhaps the most significant change, however, was the way in which obstructed views and perspectives were opened up to celebrate this home’s location (including a large window behind the staircase framing the historical stone retaining wall). The courtyard garden was redesigned to relocate the swimming pool and create a covered terrace – very much the heart of the home – with courtyards on either side and a roof garden above. A custom-designed steel screen along a gallery walkway, depicting a stylised map of the area, artistically enhances the relationship of the house with its setting.
